A sixteenth-century coaching inn thoughtfully renovated and creatively reimagined as a luxurious retreat in the centre of Medieval Rye.
ABOUT US
Whether you’re sipping local sparkling wine in the Dragon Bar, sharing our famous wood-roasted steaks with friends in the George Grill, or taking a cocktail in one of our cosy sitting rooms, unwind and indulge in our wining and dining spaces…
With its abundantly romantic original Georgian ballroom, our historic hotel offers the perfect venue for your wedding day in the heart of rye.
“Once we stop wishing it were summer, winter can be a glorious season … It’s a time for reflection and recuperation, for slow replenishment, for putting your house in order.”
Thank you @thefitnessphysio_ for sharing this beautiful quote from Katherine May’s Wintering and for sharing your thoughts on your stay with us:
“...there are months when life moves fast and we push harder, and others that ask us to slow down, rest, and recharge. This year, as the days grow shorter and darker, I’m really trying to lean into this.
We’re staying at The George Hotel in Rye as part of a collaboration stay, something we’re so grateful for. We stayed here last year and loved it so much we had to come back. The service is on point, the food and drinks are incredible, and we were lucky enough to stay in the junior suite this time — it was perfect. Not sure how I’ll go back to my own bed after those sheets!
We drove up from London and it took us 2 hours but you can get a train straight from London Bridge directly into Rye and it’s a 4 min walk to the hotel!
We spent the day hiking from Rye to Camber Sands, it was rainy and atmospheric. Who said you need sun for the beach?”

With a heady mix of reflection, revelry & community spirit, November in and around Rye is all about warmth — the glow of bonfires & fireworks, the shared quiet moment of remembrance and the sparkle of festive markets.
From dancing like no-one’s watching to poetic pillow talk & a check in with our favourite local film house, this month The George celebrates connection, craft & culture.
What’s on?
🔥 Rye Fawkes Night - an historic procession which actually predates Guy Fawkes’s attempt to blow up parliament - culminating in a huge bonfire on The Salts & an explosive fireworks display across the Marsh. PLEASE NOTE - due to huge visitor numbers, The George is only open to Dragon card holders & hotel guests on the night, so be sure to bring your card or have made your fireside reservation! - Sat 15 Nov
⛪ A Remembrance Memorial will display 10,000 handmade poppies from St Mary’s church tower in nearby Battle. 10 months in the making by the local community, an 84 ft net will stretch down to the foot of the tower to commemorate 80 years since the end of WW2. For November. #LestWeForget
🖋️ New ‘Pillow Poetry’ collaboration with Rye Harbour Writers - a group of 14 local poets & writers who have created 24 individual poems for guests of The George.
🪩 Rye Discotheque - our Community Centre will be transformed, for one night only, into disco heaven with three live DJs, spinning everything from 70s disco anthems, to funk & soul classics - Sat 29 Nov, 7-11.30pm
🎄 FOUR Christmas Markets - Winchelsea on Sat 15 Nov - for browsing artisan stalls. Icklesham - on Sat 22 Nov - for its famous antiques, vintage ware & seasonal gifts. Udimore on Sat 29 Nov for hand-made decorations, wreaths & for meeting Father Christmas & his donkey! Rye’s Christmas Market - also on Sat 29 Nov - for gorgeous antiques, homeware fabrics, clothes, toy shops & more.
🍿 This month’s ‘Checking in with...’ blog is with Matt Brecken of @kino_rye - our lovely, local independent cinema that screens the best of box office alongside special screenings & talks, such as Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio - check out the blog via the link in bio & the film on Weds 12 Nov

Calling all lovers of reclaimed materials ..
The headboard and curtains in Room 1 were made from an antique `suzani`, which is Farsi for a piece of fabric made with intricate needlework.
We love the bold shapes and faded vintage feel.
A beautiful find from our interior design partners @retrouvius
