With its own staircase winding up into a private sanctuary, Room 45 is alive with colours and interesting features, most notably a whole wall of vivid patterned fabric (Medieval meets India). The bathroom has a rolltop bath and bright mustard floor – plus look out for Mabel the dog (rest assured, she’s not real, but made from porcelain). Outside you will be able to gaze on Rye’s rooftops and church.

Room 46 is the Mapp room, named after E.F Benson’s Mapp and Lucia novels (44 is the Lucia abode). It has an internal staircase and a handsome, eccentric feel with burnt orange colours and lovely flying duck motifs. The bathroom has a huge rolltop for the perfect soak.
