‘A Night and a Day in Rye, East Sussex’
“For an overnight stay in Rye, The George in Rye offers a well-located and stylish base. The owners have managed to pull off that rarest of feats, introducing stylish, sometimes quirky, contemporary design into a series of 16th Century buildings without losing the gracious charm of the period. This is down to the talent and expertise of co-owner Katie Clarke and her design partner Maria Speake who sourced fabrics, furnishings and individual pieces from an eclectic range of established brands, reclamation yards and local designers.
The 34 rooms and suites are idiosyncratic in their shape, size and decorating styles. One favourite is the Junior Suite in room 31. Formerly a hayloft, it has a gabled ceiling with bleached wood walls and features a hidden double bed for children – although the quirkiness wouldn’t be lost on most adults either – a fabulous wet room and a luxurious, nickel roll top bath”.
