With the mercury rising, the calendar in our perfect pocket of south-east England is hotting up.
Being National Walking Month, May is the month to get walking! Why not strap on your boots and set out on a bucolic circular ramble, starting at Rye railway station and crossing relatively easy terrain. The route takes you past the hauntingly beautiful Camber Castle, built on Henry VIII’s orders – the centuries have worn down the structure and it now resembles a softly squatted sandcastle. A short but sharp hill leads to the pretty streets and rose-clad cottages of Winchelsea, before trotting back to Rye.
Staying with our neighbouring Cinque Port, green-fingered fathers will enjoy a tour of the Winchelsea Secret Gardens on June 16th. Part of the National Garden Scheme, this is a one-day opportunity to see some lovely private gardens in this ancient town. Round your weekend off with a slap-up Father’s Day lunch the following day in our Grill – booking essential!
Meanwhile, for the foodies among you, the inaugural Rye Food & Drink Festival is being held on June 8th-10th just outside Rye. There will be stalls featuring local produce, street food, craft ales, live music and activities for the kids.
And finally, of (musical) note, the Peasmarsh Chamber Music Festival returns on June 21st-24th, bringing world-class musicians together to perform nine-concerts. For those attending the orchestral concert in Rye on Friday June 22nd (8pm in St Mary’s Church), The George Grill is offering a pre-concert supper at either 5.30pm or 6pm – two courses for £20 or three for £25.
