Well we had to join the smartphone revolution some time – and that time is now. We are delighted to announce the launch of The George in Rye’s very own iphone app, which is designed for guests so they have a handy on-the-go guide to Rye while they are here. From places to visit like gardens, beaches and historic homes and special events, through to handy info like the nearest pharmacist, Doctor’s surgery and ATM machine, it’s all here. Plus you can make a reservation direct from the app and send a postcard to your family. Granted, it can’t make you a cup of tea when you arrrive, but that’s a few years off at least. Want the app? Go get it here (there will be an android version very soon).

Rye’s shopping revolution continues at remarkable speed. Hot on the heels of Bird boutique, which we covered a couple of months ago, comes Violetta, a lovely jewel box of a place selling niche perfumes (including Miller Harris and Serge Lutyens), makeup from Paul and Joe, vintage-style jewellery, lingerie and even hand-made chocolates – see the shop featured on the photo on the right (taken by local photographer Wendy Carrig). We are very much enjoying it (maybe Katie more than Alex), and what’s more, Violetta have very kindly offered a £5 voucher for guests of The George in Rye over the summer  – so make sure you get one at reception if you’re staying with us. Read more about Violetta via this writeup from Red Magazine.

Yo ho ho – as longtime readers of this newsletter will know, Rye has a history as a hotbed of smuggling. So it is very appropriate that down the road in Hastings, the largest centre for Miniature Golf in the UK (and one of the biggest in the world), has just opened a new pirate themed course called….Pirate Golf. Not to be confused with Crazy Golf, ‘Adventure Golf’ is about spectacle and show as well as fun and folly. Apparently there will be set-piece battles between pirate ships including explosions and cannon balls, a giant skull with an appetite for golf balls, and water sprays that threaten to get players wet. As a major new visitor attraction, we think this will be great for families over the summer, so get practicing your swing now.

For those of you who fancy a few days away over the summer and who want to take advantage of great value rates, don’t forget about our Midweek Breaks. A two night stay starts from £165 per person, including dinner on the evening of your choice. The Midweek Break is a great opportunity to experience Rye at quieter times away from the weekends, and to have the town (and Camber Sands beach) for yourselves. Find out more on our Midweek Break here.

Enjoy the wonderful summer weather,

Best Wishes,
Alex and Katie Clarke
