Greetings Georgians,

Lots of nice things are happening in Rye over the coming months. We’re looking forward to a gorgeous-sounding concert on the 2nd May held in the atmospheric setting of St Thomas the Martyr church in Winchelsea. Duo Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin (pictured), who bring together musical traditions from folk, Indian classical and American Blues, are much praised by the liked of Fiona Talkington on BBC Radio 3 and in fact we are listening to some of their songs as we type right now on Spotify. Highly recommended if you are planning to be in Rye around then – more information on tickets here.

Not a lot of people know that Rye houses one of the oldest Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe organs in the world, dating back to 1925. Pre-talkies, this would have been your audio accompaniment when going to the flicks! There is now an academy which teaches this instrument to the next generation; only one other such institution exists globally, in New York. On Saturday 11th May, Rye College, which houses the Wurlitzer, hosts ‘Another Night at the Silent Movies’, screenings of silent films accompanied as they would have been back in the twenties by organised Carl Heslop. Tickets include popcorn and icecream and are only £8 for adults and £4 for children. If you fancy an unusual night out, do take a look here.

More outdoorsey activities will be on offer this May half term, during the RX Wildlife Festival. On Romney Marsh there will be a Bumblebee Day which will show you how to spot between different species. Early risers can come to experience the Dawn Chorus on Winchelsea Beach with the National Trust – with bacon butties provided to incentivise, naturally. These are dream holiday activities and enable you to enjoy some quality relaxation time at the hotel while ensuring all are entertained. The festival website carries a full programme, and we still have some room availability over half term to enjoy it.

Have a wonderful Easter and we look forward to seeing you here soon,

Best wishes,
The George in Rye
