Greetings Georgians,

When we opened The Shop Next Door a year ago, technically the shop was actually two doors away. But as of this spring, we’ve rectified the situation. When the actual shop next door became available we decided to take it over, and have moved into an all-new base, selling homewares and products you can find in the hotel. The Financial Times recently featured the shop in an article about hotels which do retail, which you can read here.  To add to this we were shortlisted as best newcomer in the Farrow & Ball stockists’ awards a fortnight ago.  Here is a picture of our windows, which feature some pieces by local sculptor Stephanie Rubin – we thought they’d show off the jewellery nicely…

We’d like to raise a glass to a couple of our local vineyards on their award-winning bubbly….  Charles Palmer‘s Sparkling Brut from nearby Winchelsea has just received a gold award and critic’s choice in the 2014 Sommelier Wine Awards.  Not bad for their first vintage – we’ve tried it and can confirm it is well-deserved!   Over in Appledore, Gusborne‘s Brut Reserve was also a winner at the International Wine and Spirits Competition.  We’re pleased to let you know that you can find both these on our wine list!

We’d also like to give a big oink oink to the marvellous gourmet food van The Red Pig.  New in Rye this summer, The Red Pig sells delicious pulled pork, sausages, chocolate brownies and lemon drizzle cakes. And coffee of course. Look out for the Red Pig when you’re down at the beach between Winchelsea and Pett Level.  You can also follow their Facebook page to see upcoming dates and spots.

Now a regular feature each summer, the Rye Bay Beach School – provider of the most imaginative and lively children’s activities – is making a welcome return. Running between Monday 28th July and Friday 8th August, this year you can expect crabbing, film-making, painting, puppet-making and dancing, and your little ones can also learn to make sushi and crab ravioli so it’s hello to restaurant-quality lunches via child slave labour! No they’ll love it really.

You can pick and mix from the activities or sign up for a few days, but be warned: the beach school is extremely popular now word has got out. Book into sessions here, and don’t forget if you want to stay at The George to take a look at our website for availability and reservations over those two weeks. While the kids go off to do something wildly wonderful, you get to have a bath, a massage and a prawn lunch with a glass of Rosé at The Grill.

Best Wishes,
Alex and Katie Clarke
