We are delighted to announce some very exciting news….Having taken over the building next door to The George in Rye on the High Street, we have just opened ten new bedrooms and The Grill restaurant.
The bedrooms include the indulgent Mapp and Lucia rooms, named after the heroines of E.F Benson’s novels, an outrageously decadent Miami-style Junior Suite with round bed in its own building (pictured), and a wood-panelled beach hut-inspired room with private outdoor seating.

Meanwhile The George’s two Haylofts (pictured) have been converted into gabled getaways with a 1950s seaside feel. One of these is specially designed for families and has a separate sleeping den for the children – or grownups can use it as a DVD or reading lounge. And there are more! If you head to the bedroom pages of our website, you can see into the room galleries which include photos of all the new ones.

Downstairs, the magnificent George Grill is presided over by our new head chef, Andrew Billings, formerly at The Griffin Inn in Fletchling, whose menu really makes the most of seafood and fish from Rye Bay along with seasonal vegetables and local meats. With a Wood-Charcoal Grill at the heart of the kitchen, try the Lobster with garlic, chilli and parsley, or a Spatchcocked poussin with pomegranate cooked this way, and you won’t look back!

The restaurant has been designed using reclaimed furniture, including a gymnasium floor from a girl’s school in Wales, and a huge wall sculpture of a eagles originally commissioned for Barclays head office in the 1950s! Drool over the current Grill menu here.

We also wanted to draw your attention to Tregulland, a new luxurious holiday home in Cornwall for large groups, which Katie has had a hand in designing, alongside Rye’s very own Marcus Crane. Tregulland (pictured right) is a gorgeous Barn and Cottage in 16 acres of private grounds which sleeps up to 24 people and can be hired all together, or seperately for smaller groups. With an HD projector screen for evening films, 11 en suite bedrooms, bespoke services and dinners, and all ecologically designed (including the first indoor freshwater pool in Britain), this is a very impressive yet relaxed pad for celebrations, holidays and parties. It’s also great for kids. Do check out the website – Tregulland has literally just opened for booking.

Finally, though July has resembled November at times, the sun should be returning just in time for August, and the season of picnics, concerts and outdoor plays. Here in Rye, the increasingly renowned Lamb Players are performing As You Like It from 5th-7th August in the beautiful grounds of Lamb House (right), once Henry James’ home. Ex-RSC actress Anna Madeley is playing Rosalind, and Geoffrey Streathfield, who is to join the cast of Spooks in a leading role for the new series, will be Benedict, directed by Tamara Harvey and Rob Hastie. So chill a bottle of prosecco, get your picnic hamper ready, and prepare for the magic of Shakespeare’s magical woodland comedy. Get your tickets by calling The George on 01797 222 114 or stopping by in person, at £15 each (£12 conc.).

With Best Wishes for the summer,

Alex and Katie Clarke
