Dear Georgians

Well we’re excited – we know Christmas is not all about telly, but this year Mapp and Lucia is on BBC1 for three nights from 29th December. And Rye has a starring role (alongside Anna Chancellor, Miranda Richardson and Mark Gatiss)! Based on EF Benson’s novels of scheming one-upmanship among cream teas and Bridge games, Mapp and Lucia is set among the fictional, picture-postcard town of Tilling, aka Rye. While filming here this summer many of the cast stayed at The George in Rye. We’re anticipating huge interest so if you’ve been thinking about a trip in the next few months, we recommend booking soon; you can even stay in the Mapp or Lucia rooms. Have a look at our Weekend Wonder or Midweek Breaks which are the best ways to stay for two nights.

Rye’s other big news is the imminent opening of the Kino cinema just behind the hotel on Lion Street. It’s in the beautifully renovated Further Education Buildings, and going to offer screenings in style in a 100-seat auditorium, with creative programming including everyone’s favourite, NT Live. If Kino’s first cinema in Hawkshurst is anything to go by, we’ll be popping up most weeks and we know our guests are just going to love it. The venue’s opening any time now, so keep an eye out (www.kinodigital.co.uk) for the cutting of the red tape.

Over in The Shop Next Door, we’re being mobbed for our cashmere bobble hats, clutch bags and candles. If in the New Year you fancy refreshing your living room or bedroom for winter nesting, come down as we have all sorts of throws and cushions in the inimitable George style. Whilst here you can recharge your batteries in the Grill with our Superfood Salad,  packed with kale, brazil nuts, grapefruit, ginger, butternut squash and beetroot to keep your toes singing and your immune-system topped up. Remember we’re only 90 minutes on the train from London’s Kings Cross St Pancras so you can whizz down for the day and enjoy Rye in those lazy days between Christmas and New Year. Follow the Shop’s Facebook page to see the latest stock and opening times.

We’re now full in the hotel for New Year’s Eve, but if you are in the area, please do come down to the Tap to see in the New Year with one of our favourite musicians, Roger Hubbard.  Our new cocktail list should see you through – Winter Bourbon and Milk & Honey will warm your cockles and have you singing Auld Lang Syne with gusto.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy, hearty and healthy 2015.

With Best Wishes,
Alex, Katie & The George in Rye team.
